What is TOG and what do you need to consider in the Spring Summer months?

As Spring arrives and the sun begins to linger a little longer, there's a transition from the crisp chill of winter to those warmer Spring and Summer days and nights.

For first-time mums, this can bring its own set of worries as you adjust to a different temperature and think about how your little one continues to stay snug and comfortable. Wearing the correct TOG is very important but what exactly is TOG?

TOG is a measure of textile warmth commonly used in the bedding industry. It's a unit that quantifies the thermal resistance of a fabric. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the garment or bedding. A lower tog indicates a lighter, cooler option. It's crucial for parents to understand the significance of TOG ratings, especially as the seasons shift. Failure to adjust bedding accordingly can lead to discomfort and disrupted sleep for both baby and parent—a scenario no one wants to encounter.

But which Tog rating should you choose?

At Slumbersac, we've simplified the decision-making process with our comprehensive range of baby and toddler sleeping bags, each carefully designed to cater to your little one's needs. Here's a breakdown:

  • 0.5 Tog: Suited for room temperatures above 24 degrees Celsius (no padding)

  • 1.0 Tog: Ideal for room temperatures between 18 to 24 degrees Celsius (lightly padded)

  • 2.5 Tog: Perfect for room temperatures between 15 to 21 degrees Celsius (standard padding)

  • 3.5 Tog: Tailored for room temperatures below 18 degrees Celsius (thick padding)

It is important to keep in mind that these temperatures are based on the room or nursery temperature and not on the weather outside.

The 1.0 TOG is a perfect choice for springtime. This lightly padded option provides just enough warmth to keep your baby cosy during those cooler spring nights without causing overheating.

In addition to TOG rating, there are a few other factors to consider when choosing a sleeping bag for your baby.

Size matters: opt for a bag that fits your baby snugly to avoid discomfort and potential hazards.

Material is crucial too: look for breathable, lightweight fabrics that are gentle on your baby's delicate skin.

Safety is paramount: Ensure that the sleeping bag you choose meets all safety standards, with features like a secure fit and no loose fabric that could pose a suffocation risk.

With these considerations taken into account you can rest assured that your little one will remain cosy and comfortable through the season.
